Fun with Resin!

This month has been full of finishing assessments to finish up my grad program @Teachers College. My final thesis explores creative cognition in technology; it seems like our current approach to instruction for creativity can be improved if we focus more on the mental processes that encourage creative thought. Taking cues from the artistic studio process rather than using cutesy apps to replicate existing artwork might help students develop more of their own imaginative thoughts. My work on the subject is far from finished (just this week, I spoke to another TC alum who suggested I read new work by Michael Hanson in Dynamic Perspectives on Creativity). However, after all the ceremony and celebrating, I decided to take a mental break with some liquid resin lying around the house. Here are some pics of the process for three fun projects:

  1. Resin pendant experimentation - For these pendant-type things, I hacked up some bobby pins for loops and used some toothbrush packaging as the casing. The teeny icons are scribbled on paper and clear plastic, then coated in clear resin.

  2. Refurbished glass planter - Here is another resin-based projects from May: refurbishing some broken stemware to use as a little planter. Luckily the stem broke off through the bottom, leaving a hole through the bottom of the glass. In adding a resin base, we used a screw to stabilize the glass to the mold, then removed it to keep a little space open for drainage. It turned out a little bit lopsided, but works perfectly!

  3. Resin drum pads w/ Michael Sobolak - As part of a new version of his Midi Orff Bass Bar Drum Pads, Michael needed a hand making new resin drumpads with some incredible colors and plastic plates as molds. The SoStrong colors are true to name, and just a tiny drop made very deep blues and purples! Balanced with lighter yellow and green, these turned out beautifully. To see the final product with musical sensors and Arduino integration, check out Michael's page.

For some great tips and tricks on using liquid resin, I found resinobsession.com and ArtResin on youtube to be really helpful. Good luck and enjoy the mess!
