Today was the public opening of a new and exciting design space at our nearby university affiliate, Barnard College. Although TC has its own open makerspace called the Thingspace, it's always exciting to see new opportunities cropping up for students to engage in making and design. We also love that Barnard's space is "radically inclusive" and it embraces a truly welcoming approach that encourages newcomers and beginners to get started. What better way to get more women & students interested in technology?
As someone who has a backlog of artistic maker projects (especially gearing up for the holidays), I'm always happy to find new spaces that welcome affiliates and participants. Barnard's Design Center has expansive hours as well - instead of open laser cutting from 6 to 7, users are able to come for up to eight hours a day if they need to.
There are always limitations to sharing a collaborative space like this; the Design Center will not store your materials, nor will they be able to provide materials for you. Sometimes, Makerspaces will have a bank of wood, plastic, fabric or cardboard that you might need to get started. As of now, Barnard's space doesn't provide anything more than the utter basics (thread, filament, paint, vinyl for the Cricut). I'll be keeping tabs on the Design Center protocol in case this changes, but it's nice to know ahead of time to bring my own wood for laser cutting!
